watched kfp 4 on a shady piracy website with a friend last night and oh boy.
things i liked:
-mr ping and li's scenes were very fun and charming. they weren't needed at all, but they gave me joy.
-tai lung had some very charming scenes and i ultimately think this is a good direction for his character... at least in theory, but i will get to that.
-i liked some of the ideas behind the chameleon. her being this toxic mother figure is pretty interesting and i enjoy the shapeshifter thing. big fan of her design as well.
things i didn't like:
-kai and shen were really there for no reason, had no dialogue and ended up adding nothing to the movie.
-as much as i think tai lung's storyline is good in theory, in practice there was no actual lead up to it. that final scene of him saying goodbye to po would hit so much harder if it was in a movie that had actually fleshed both of them out.
-i like the ideas behind the chameleon but not the execution. this whole movie somehow feels like a super early draft? because so much of her story actually needed some reworking.
-i don't like zhen. much like the chameleon, i do feel she had potentially but they do nothing with it. she also has no chemistry with po nor is she an endearing character.
-that ending sucked ass.
-the furious five's absence is very felt, and it makes the whole movie feel awkward.
-the pacing was so weird.
conclusion: in my opinion, a good kfp movie needs good emotional beats, good action sequences, strong character writing, and a compelling villain. and out of all these, we really only got good action, and even then it never made me feel the way the og 3 movies did. it felt like a bunch of disjointed ideas put together with glue. i was really disappointed.
