so taylor's new album just came out and i've had a lot of time to think about it. and i want to share my overall thoughts on it so here i am! for reference, while i wouldnt call myself a swiftie, i listen to her music a ton and do really enjoy her work. and i had really high hopes for this album because of the aesthetic she was presenting it with.

so here are my thoughts on every individual track:

the fate of ophelia: i think this is a very strong opener. it's sweet, it's romantic and i like the use of ophelia as a symbol for suffering.

elizabeth taylor: really good! super reminiscent of reputation. i also think it works really well with the show girl aesthetic.

opalite: really fun and sweet! i think the lyrics are incredibly cute.

father figure: this is my favorite song. i think taylor does really well when she's telling a story, and it's cool to have her playing a character. i think it's a strong critique. people are taking the "my dick is bigger" line too seriously, when it's clearly in line with the character she's satirizing in this song.

eldest daughter: at this point of the album i was pretty confident i was going to like it. this was the first song that made me a little skeptical tho. she's capable of writing incredible lyrics so it's incredibly depressing to see her rely on this type of terminally online language. it completely ruins any potential impact the song could have. this genuinely feels like something she wrote with the expectation of trending on tiktok.

ruin the friendship: very cute! like i said, she works really well when she's telling a story.

actually romantic: i think if you're going to make a song this meanspirited you have to make it really good. and while i see potential in the lyrics they're not fleshed out enough to really hit, and sonically it's very boring, so it makes it hard to overlook how childish this is.

wi$h li$t: very boring.

wood: not particularly interesting, but it's clearly not a very serious track so it works for what it is. i think it's so disappointing this wasn't the sabrina feature! not only do i think she works really well with this sort of music... the name... the pun... it would've been funny and probably elevated an otherwise unremarkable track.

cancelled!: baffling how bad this is. incredibly out of touch. she clearly thinks this is really cool and cunty which makes it even more embarrassing.

honey: it's cute but otherwise uninteresting.

the life of a showgirl: i like the idea. but it feels so... boring.

overall. i was incredibly disappointed by this. usually she's better than this. yes, she's always had bad, embarrassing lyrics, or stuff that was just made for radio but it has never felt as overwhelming as this. there is very little worth discussing here. let's hope next album makes up for it i guess.
