Bunnies are of course going to favor weedy green lawns over elegant stone yards punctuated with waxy sculptural ornamentals. This one looks like an Eastern Cottontail (Sylvilagus floridanus); Marsh Rabbits (S. palustris) (1), tend to have shorter ears, and my neighborhood strikes me as a bit too far from the water to attract them during the dry season.

It’s on alert, reacting sensibly to the arrival of a member of the deadliest of the Thousand, and so this was the only shot I was able to get before it went PATWINNNG! under the seagrape bed (the round-leaved shrub at center right, bordered by white river rocks.)

Why, hello there, lovely people of Dreamwidth! My friends list has become a little quiet as of late, so I thought I'd try and find a few nice new individuals to get to know :)

Name: Tina

Age: I turn 37 years old in 20 days - you do the math :P

I mostly post about: my daily life (including pictures), anything that goes through my head and I feel like reflecting on, things I've done, occasional travel reports, weekly "What are you reading Wednesday" posts. My journal is very much a "real life" one, since I am not into fandom - it's more than okay if you are, though!

My hobbies are: Reading, listening to music, podcasts (mostly True Crime), taking walks, doing jigsaw puzzles (I just finished a 1000 piece one of the Iguazu Falls in South America), travelling, going to concerts, hanging out with friends, trying out new restaurants/cafés...

My fandoms are: I don't have fandoms, so I'll just list a few favourites of mine

Music: lately I have been really into The Warning, The Last Dinner Party and Taylor Swift. Other bands/artists I like are: Within Temptation, Nightwish, Tegan & Sara, Amy Shark, Bring me the Horizon, A Day to Remember, Alan Doyle, Great Big Sea, Derina Harvey Band, Emilie Autumn, Kellie Loder, Freya Ridings, Ice Nine Kills, Florence & the Machine, Olivia Rodrigo, Chappell Roan, DeathbyRomy...I love a great variety of music! Feel free to recommend me something you'd think I'd like ;)

Books: "Lolita" by Vladimir Nabokov, "The Wrong Boy" by Willy Russell, "Middlesex" by Jeffrey Eugenides, "The Future Of Another Timeline" by Annalee Newitz, anything by Eowyn Ivey, anything by Charlotte McConaghy (I can't wait to get my hands on her new one which just came out!), "The Kangaroo Chronicles" by Marc-Uwe Kling, "Orlando" by Virginia Woolf, and lots of thrillers/murder mysteries. I also admit that I still have a bit of nostalgia for the Harry Potter series, although I cannot with a good conscience read/watch/buy anything related to them anymore, for known reasons...

TV shows: Stranger Things, Wednesday, Son of a Critch (although I still need to watch the latest season!), Law & Order:SVU, Is it Cake?, This Hour Has 22 Minutes. A recent one that's made a huge impression on me was Adolescence, it was both shocking and thought-provoking. In the past I also enjoyed Pushing Daisies, The Nanny & Call the Midwife.

Movies: Anything starring Meryl Streep - I adore her ♥ I am also a huge nerd for Godzilla and monster movies in general, under which I count all kinds of "animal horror" flicks. They are just fun to watch, even if most of them aren't very good xD
In general, I don't watch as many movies as other people seem to, but some other favourites are: Despicable Me series, Minions (yeah, I know, I'm so ~uncool...), The Secret Life Of Pets, 10 Lives, The Twelve Tasks of Asterix, Kinsey, Forrest Gump, If these Walls Could Talk II, The Chinese Botanist's Daughters, Creep 1 & 2. I like found footage-style horror movies a lot, too, even though I haven't seen that many of those yet. Again, feel free to rec me some :)

I'm looking to meet people who: are kind, empathetic, understanding and funny. While common interests are always a plus, they aren't necessary - some of my best friends I have met on here have had barely anything in common with me when it comes to the things we like :)
I love reading about what you love, what makes you happy, fascinates and motivates you on this journey called life ;)

Honestly, one of my favourite things about people is listening/reading/watching them talk about their passions, seeing their eyes light up and them just being happy and excited. It's wonderful to me in these cynical times when somebody isn't ashamed to show enthusiasm ♥

My posting schedule tends to be: daily/weekly/monthly/sporadic/etc.

I aim for at least once weekly, twice when you count my "What are you reading Wednesday". I also try my best to read my friends list and comment at least once a week...these past few months I have been quite stressed with various health problems which made me too exhausted a lot of the time. However, I am getting better and am determined to be a good DW friend now!

When I add people, my dealbreakers are: supporters of Trump and any of his ilk, and generally Far Right politics. I would say the usual bigotry but lbr, who thinks of themselves as a bigot? I am a huge proponent of "live and let live, as long as you don't harm others".

I have a few mental illnesses which means I can be quite sensitive and might post a rant or two once in a while. While I have gotten a lot better over the past couple years, mine is not a ~positive vibes only kind of journal, so if you want that, I am probably not the friend for you. That's not meant to sound mean, but I just want to feel comfortable writing about everything on my mind without worrying that it might become too much for somebody. Hope that makes sense?

Otherwise, I love meeting people from all walks of life - I am a curious person so it's great to be able to get a glimpse into the lives of people from all over the world and all kinds of lifestyles. Journalling has expanded my horizons quite a lot and made me grow as a person, which is fantastic.

Before adding me, you should know: I have a cat called Lucy, who I will post pictures of on a regular basis. So you better like cats :P

Phew, I think I pretty much covered enough ground here! I hope this didn't make anyone fall asleep, lol. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Also, please do comment on here before adding me, thank you very much!

sacerdotal [sas-er-doht-l]

adjective:
of, relating to, or characteristic of priests
characterized by belief in the divine authority of the priesthood

Examples:

He seemed indeed a sacerdotal figure - a high priest who offered his own life before accepting the animal's. Every one of us was transfigured by the rite. (Christopher North, Taurine state of grace , The Critic, March 2021 )

After the reading - ‘Neither pray I for these alone...' - one of the ladies was so pleased with the sacerdotal language that she blew me a kiss across the aisle. (Jason Goodwin, 'When someone dies, you can lose a place, as well as a person', Country Life, June 2019)

In the meltdown's aftermath, a small unregulated bank is unusually suspect, especially when operating in a 'sacerdotal-monarchical state established under the 1929 Lateran Treaty' and reporting to an abstract nominee with an ethereal address. Nor can it help that the bank is a market-maker in loaves and fishes. (Matthew Stevenson, The Vatican Bank: In God We Trust?, newgeography, May 2013)

The brand inspires a sacerdotal devotion in many of its workers (its archives contain the papers of one of the atelier's premieres, or heads, who served from 1947 to 1990). (Matthew Schneier, Atop Dior, Balancing Art and Commerce, The New York Times, July 2017)

He would immerse himself in the sacerdotal labor of translation. (Joyce Carol Oates, The Tattooed Girl)

Vixeela herself had at one time been numbered among the virgins but had fled from the temple and from Uzuldaroum several years before the sacerdotal age of release from her bondage. (Clark Ashton Smith, The Theft of the Thirty-Nine Girdles)

Having fixed upon this, I hired a little bark to Jubo, a place about forty leagues distant from Pate, on board which I put some provisions, together with my sacerdotal vestments, and all that was necessary for saying mass: in this vessel we reached the coast, which we found inhabited by several nations: each nation is subject to its own king; these petty monarchies are so numerous, that I counted at least ten in less than four leagues. (Father Lobo, A Voyage to Abyssinia)

One would almost imagine from the long list that is given of cannibal primates, bishops, arch-deacons, prebendaries, and other inferior ecclesiastics, that the sacerdotal order far outnumbered the rest of the population, and that the poor natives were more severely priest-ridden than even the inhabitants of the papal states. (Herman Melville, Typee)

Origin:

'of or belonging to priests or the priesthood,' c 1400, from Old French sacerdotal and directly from Latin sacerdotalis 'of or pertaining to a priest,' from sacerdos (genitive sacerdotis) 'priest,' literally 'offerer of sacrifices or sacred gifts,' from sacer 'holy' (see sacred) + stem of dare 'to give' (from PIE root do- 'to give'). (Online Etymological Dictionary)

Sacerdotal is one of a host of English words derived from the Latin adjective sacer, meaning 'sacred.' Other words derived from sacer include desecrate, sacrifice, sacrilege, consecrate, sacrament, and even execrable (developed from the Latin word exsecrari, meaning 'to put under a curse'). One surprising sacer descendant is sacrum, referring to the series of five vertebrae in the lower back connected to the pelvis. In Latin this bone was called the os sacrum, or 'holy bone,' a translation of the Greek hieron osteon. (Merriam-Webster)

I sure do!

I’m something of an astronomy nerd; you have to understand that the great solar eclipse of 8 April 2024 was something I’d been counting down to my whole life. In my native Dayton, Ohio, I’d gotten to witness the strange begrimed 40-watt sunlight (1) and dappled crescent shadows of the partial solar eclipses of 10 May 1994 and 21 August 2017, after having gotten a fleeting confirmatory glance through SolarShields under welder’s goggles: the exercise was a bit like hunting basilisks or Medusa.

Another point is that I’m acutely homesick for the seasonal markers of the place where I spent 90+% of my life: the violets and wild chives and flowering crabapples, and the two equinoctial yellows of Moraine honeylocusts: neon chartreuse foliage in the spring, and in the fall flaming saffron—turning to orange piles of cornflake crunch beneath the feet. Even the lawn weeds here are unfamiliar.

Until a couple years in advance—by which time it was too late—I had not anticipated that, by the time the total solar eclipse at long last came to Dayton, I would be gone; behold the southern Gulf Coast of Florida’s experience of the Grand Portentuous Celestial Event.

Thursday word: Exigent

exigent, adj.

ex·i·gent ˈek-sə-jənt
ˈeg-zə-

1: requiring immediate aid or action

exigent circumstances

2: requiring or calling for much : demanding

an exigent client

Did you know?

Exigent is a formal word with meanings closely tied to its Latin forbear, exigere, meaning "to demand." Exigent things and people demand attention—for example, an exigent client expects so much that they are hard to satisfy, and exigent circumstances are so significant that they can be used to justify certain police actions without the warrant typically required. Before exigent joined the language in the early 1600s, the noun exigency was being used to refer to something that is necessary in a particular situation—for example, the exigencies of an emergency situation might require that certain usual precautions be ignored. That word dates to the late 1500s, but even earlier, in the mid-1400s, exigence was on the scene doing the same job. All three words—exigent, exigency, and exigence—continue to meet the demands of English users, albeit not frequently in everyday conversation.

Pavlova - noun.

I sense a theme happening--today's word is another dessert, pavlova. One of those words often mentioned, but never really defined, a pavlova is a baked meringue topped with fruit and whipped cream. It has a fascinating history as it is a 20th century invention, named after the Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova.
